Mengapa Mata Kita Menangis Ketika Memotong Bawang Merah?

Bismillah... Pernahkah kamu memotong bawang merah?   Apa yang terjadi ketika kamu memotong bawang merah? Apakah mata kamu terasa pedih kemudian mengeluarkan air mata?   Wah masyaallah ya kenapa bisa begitu?  Yuk simak penjelasannya berikut ini.  Tahukah kamu bahwa peristiwa mata kita menangis ketika memotong bawang merah itu merupakan peristiwa kimia? Ketika kita memotong bawang merah, maka bawang merah tersebut akan mengeluarkan enzim yang disebut dengan enzim  Lachrymatory-factor synthase. Enzim   Lachrymatory-factor synthase inilah yang selanjutnya akan mengubah senyawa asam amino sulfoksida yang terdapat di dalam bawang menjadi asam sulfenik. Senyawa sulfenik ini bersifat tidak stabil, sehingga senyawa ini berubah menjadi senyawa  syn - ropanethial -s-oxide yang bersifat stabil. Ketika senyawa   syn - ropanethial -s-oxide ini terlepas ke udara dan terjadi kontak dengan mata, maka kelenjar air mata  lachrymal   kita akan terangsang untuk mengeluarkan air mata.
